Mission: The mission of St. Monica Academically Gifted Enrichment (SAGE) program is to recognize the unique characteristics and academic needs of gifted and talented (G/T) learners and to nurture the development of these learners by providing programs and services to help meet their needs.
Our Vision: We agree with the state's goal for G/T students - “to ensure that students who participate in G/T services demonstrate self-directed learning, thinking, research, and communication skills. G/T students develop innovative products and sophisticated performances that reflect individuality and creativity and are targeted to an audience outside the classroom”.
Program Details: Identification varies by grade level, but is based on the Texas Education Code definition of a gifted/talented student, which is “a child who is performing or showing the potential for performing at remarkably high levels of accomplishment when compared with others of the same age, experience, or environment.” Students are nominated for screening by classroom teachers and are identified as needing services based on a preponderance of quantitative and qualitative data, including, but not limited to: CogAT scores, ITBS scores, homeroom teacher inventory/observations, special teacher inventory/observations, Fountas & Pinnell reading level benchmarks, and classroom work samples.
In grades 1-2: A resource teacher is available to provide support for classroom teachers. Support typically includes one or more of the following: classroom visits, small group projects, extra resources, etc.
In grades 3-5: Identified students will participate in “pull out” classes on a twice-weekly basis. These classes consist of non-graded general academic exploration of various subject matter providing opportunities for students to explore concepts with greater depth and complexity while building higher-order thinking skills- namely problem-solving, visual learning, and real-world applications.
