The Academic Excellence Committee is pleased to recognize Cici Petty as St. Monica’s Teacher of the Month. Cici has been teaching middle school and high school for more than 15 years and clearly has a passion for her profession!
When reviewing the nominations for Teacher of the Month, two things surfaced about Mrs. Petty: her positivity and her openness to trying new things. In a challenging and transitional year for teachers, she has been recognized by her coworkers, students, and parents as being someone who is cheerful and who has demonstrated a growth-mindset. This year especially, we feel these two characteristics are praiseworthy and a hallmark of an excellent teacher.
Students appreciate that Mrs. Petty looks out for them, cares for them individually, and how well she models kindness. As one put it, “I can’t even describe how nice she is.” Another student remarked, “she is one of the sweetest teachers at our school.” That sentiment was reflected in the parent and coworker feedback as well. Her coworker shared, “Cici has been so positive throughout this transitional year… she always has a smile on her face. Even when the days are tough and nothing is working correctly, she will smile and say, ‘Hey girl, how’s your day?’” It was clear her cheerful nature continues to impact many in the community in a positive and lasting way.
She will be the first to admit that learning new technology is out of her comfort zone; however, Mrs. Petty maintains an open mind to learning new skills and has been incorporating fresh, new material into her ELA google classroom. Her students love her sense of humor, particularly when she responds to technology challenges by exclaiming, “Turkey Feathers and Poodle Ducks!” Cici is humble and not afraid to ask her students for help, teaching them that we all are learning and it’s okay to make mistakes. Growth-mindset isn’t a poster on her classroom wall; it’s something she gives witness to every day at school.
Cici Petty encompasses the Catholic values of St. Monica school. By her example, she reminds us, “In a world where you can be anything, be kind.” We are grateful to have someone so considerate forming our kids into people of positivity and who are open to trying new things. Thank you, Mrs. Petty, for being such a radiant, joyful person in a year when it would be easy to complain. We admire your spirit and your dedication to the teaching profession. Our kids are lucky to have you on their side!
